A Flight Experience with the Patrouille de France

My adrenaline surged as I prepared for the flight, learning the nuances of the ejector seat. The experience reminded me of France’s historic contribution to American independence over two centuries ago.

I joined the Patrouille de France in the skies above Maryland and Virginia, an endeavor that echoed the thrill of being Maverick’s wingman in “Top Gun.” However, the airsickness bag attached to my leg made such fantasies more challenging.

On July 4, 2026, I found myself at a NASA airfield in eastern Virginia, observing mechanics prepare eight fighter jets for our mission that day. The previous day had been peculiar as I checked into a hotel for a medical assessment. A flight surgeon conducted an EKG before declaring, “Now we will measure your bones.” After reviewing my medical history and ensuring my eardrums were intact, I received clearance to fly.

With adrenaline coursing through me, I donned a flight suit and sturdy boots. Trying on the flight helmet and mastering the ejector seat added to the anticipation of soon being airborne. The experience felt thrilling yet absurd.

As a middle-aged suburban dad, my usual idea of adventure is dining without reservations. Imagining myself as Maverick’s audacious wingman was a step beyond, maybe deserving a call sign like Deadline. Yet, the pouch containing an airsickness bag on my flight suit was a humbling reality check. Soon, I appreciated having it.

Beyond personal thrills, this journey highlighted France’s diplomatic endeavors. This fighter jet ride, courtesy of the French air force, aimed to commemorate France’s pivotal role in the United States’ independence—a contribution they wish Americans to remember.
