The Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington is facing multiple challenges following a refurbishment effort. Initially, the new paint job on the pool’s basin was uneven. This issue was followed by an algae bloom that turned the water a bright green. Now, the newly applied coating is peeling off, creating patches of ‘American flag blue’ amid areas of green in the murky water.
This renovation project was part of President Trump’s initiative to reseal and repaint the pool, aiming for completion ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary. However, the project has become a significant source of concern for the administration.
The Interior Department announced on social media that workers successfully eliminated the algae, which was exacerbated by heat and humidity. They posted images showing the water as ‘crystal clear,’ reflecting the Washington Monument. This was likely a response to experts who argue the water will not maintain a brilliant blue hue until longstanding issues are addressed.
Despite efforts by National Park Service crews to remove the green blooms, murky water persisted, marked by loose algae clusters. Additionally, sections of the coating had already detached from the basin, revealing the original concrete beneath. At least two large areas were notably affected, with one missing piece approximately the size of a park bench.
Alex Hobe, a 52-year-old local, witnessed these issues firsthand. While delivering food nearby, he stopped to observe the renovations. Upon seeing a floating paint chip, he retrieved it. The chip was semitransparent and had a rough texture, highlighting the challenges of the recent renovations.
