The search for the new James Bond is currently underway, with former Bond girl Alison Papworth expressing her views on the matter. Papworth, who has also carved out a career as a director for a London design and consultancy firm, revealed her hopes for the character’s future. Talking to Fox News Digital, she emphasized her preference for maintaining the traditional male portrayal of Bond.
“If they’re true to the books, I hope it’s a man,” Papworth commented. “A man, just a man. I think it would be strange if it were a woman. It would be a totally different thing. So I hope it’s another man, another gorgeous man.” Her remarks came in the wake of Gary Oldman’s comments on “The Morning Show,” where he hinted at his costar Jack Lowden being a possible contender for the role. Papworth herself had been a Bond girl in “For Your Eyes Only” and “Octopussy,” both starring Roger Moore.
Oldman noted that Lowden was rumored to be on the shortlist for the iconic role. Although the casting decision has reportedly been made, the official announcement is pending. Meanwhile, Amazon MGM Studios gained control over the James Bond franchise in 2025. This development occurred after collaborating with producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.
In May, the studio disclosed their ongoing efforts to find the next James Bond star. Director Denis Villeneuve is set to lead the next installment with Steven Knight writing the screenplay. Following Daniel Craig’s portrayal in “No Time to Die” in 2021, actors such as Paul Mescal, Jacob Elordi, and Jack O’Connell have been speculated as possible successors.
“One thing I really remember about Roger Moore is when we were in India; a stuntman used to smuggle beef drippings in his luggage for Roger because he loved it,” Papworth reminisced. “It was very funny and stuck in my mind all those years later.”
Roger Moore had been noted not only for his talent but also for his gentlemanly conduct. Papworth recalled his humor and storytelling during her time working with him.
While being a Bond girl had its perks, including luxurious travel to destinations like Rio de Janeiro, the filming process wasn’t always glamorous. “It was the middle of winter filming ‘Octopussy’ in Pinewood Studios, supposed to be India,” said Papworth. “Temperatures were below freezing. All the girls wore red bodysuits with big capes, but we were so cold that we had thermals on underneath.”
Initially, Papworth didn’t expect to participate in two Bond films due to industry sentiment about “Bond Girls.” However, Barbara Broccoli saw potential and invited her for another movie, an invitation that greatly impacted her life, forging lifelong friendships with fellow Bond girls.
After her acting and modeling career, Papworth transitioned into interior design. “My husband had lots of properties, and I’d always loved interior design,” Papworth explained. She developed a successful business in this field, continuing its operation with personal expertise after her husband’s passing.
Today, Alison Papworth heads Camhall Design & Consultancy, which undertakes prestigious projects internationally. Additionally, she assists in charity fundraising efforts alongside her friend Joan Collins, supporting Shooting Star Children’s Hospices.
Despite stepping back from the limelight, Papworth cherishes her period in show business. “I love show business,” she shared, thankful she maintains a private life while participating in signing events for devoted Bond fans.
