Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu will sit out the 2026-27 figure skating season, announcing plans to return for the 2027-28 season. She revealed on social media her decision to take a break, focusing on personal growth and artistry: “I always want to challenge myself in new ways, so my artistry & skating can evolve. It’s important to me that my sport reflects my personal growth.” Liu aims to fine-tune her skills during this break, maintaining her training regime.
In an interview, Liu expressed her intention to improve various aspects of her skating, including spins and jumps. She stated, “I really want to improve my skating, and I wanted to take the time to do that for myself and just to evolve.” Liu also emphasized her desire to support her teammates and competitors during her hiatus, maintaining excitement for their progress.
Liu’s decision is supported by her coaches, Phillip DiGuglielmo and Massimo Scali, who recognized her need for a break. The coaches understood Liu’s perspective and emphasize that her popularity is growing rapidly.
Liu, 21, gained prominence after becoming the first American to win Olympic women’s singles gold since 2002. She won in Milan in February, triggering numerous off-ice opportunities. Although she missed the World Championships in March, Liu engaged in various non-competitive activities, including performing on the Stars on Ice tour.
Her recent off-ice activities include a moment with Taylor Swift, a music video appearance for Laufey, and attending the Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week. Liu retired at age 16 following her Olympic debut in 2022 and returned to figure skating with renewed passion, capturing the world title in 2025.
Speaking about her journey, Liu felt gratitude, sharing her excitement in competing alongside remarkable skaters. Despite being scheduled to compete at Skate America, Liu’s absence won’t impact the event as other U.S. Olympic medalists and champions will participate.
Liu remains connected with the figure skating world and is keen on supporting her teammates, ensuring presence in the sport despite not competing this season.
