Cam Brown, a senior defender at Naperville North, stepped onto the field for his first varsity start, embracing a critical role and showing profound appreciation for the opportunity to play under coach Jim Konrad. His words reveal the honor he feels wearing the Huskies jersey. Brown reflected, To wear this jersey and be on this field where all these great players played, and have coach Konrad as my coach, is an honor. We talk about legacy all the time and how we have to honor the jersey, wearing it with pride, knowing the greats that wore it before us. It’s what I’ve been looking for, and it’s helped me grow as a player.
Brown plays a pivotal role in nurturing the development of younger teammates as Naperville North seeks to defend their Class 3A state championship with a largely new lineup. Committed to Wisconsin-Platteville, Brown was elected captain by teammates, only three of whom have prior varsity experience. Coach Konrad praised this decision, highlighting Brown’s leadership qualities. It’s cool the boys chose him as captain. He leads from the back — super vocal, a positive leader. We ask them to hold each other accountable, and Cam does this in a supportive way. He’s a super classy kid, and his work ethic allows him to connect with his teammates because he’s dedicated too.
During a tense 1-1 tie against West Chicago, Brown demonstrated his defensive prowess, anchoring a back line with seniors Liam McKenna and twin brothers Luc and Alec Schwanebeck, alongside juniors Ziden Elganzouri and sophomore defensive midfielders Carter Joseph and Barrett Yeaman. Junior goalkeeper Misael Gonzalez mentioned Brown’s potential, saying, He’s a very good teammate, a very good captain. He helps me a lot in the back with defense organization. Even off the field, he’s an outstanding person.
Gonzalez appreciates Brown’s communication skills and aggressive play. He noted, I like how he communicates with our back line and his hard playfulness. He tackles every ball fiercely.
Brown played a crucial role in the Huskies’ dramatic 3-2 victory over St. Laurence during the 2025 state championship match, conducted under harsh weather conditions. Brown managed some overtime action and converted a crucial penalty kick. He shared, It was unreal — the weather, the atmosphere, knowing our guys were tired. Creating those memories for my team was a dream.
Reprising that championship performance presents a challenge Brown eagerly embraces. He prepared for his leadership role by learning from previous captains Colin McMahon and Sam Hess. Brown stated, I reached out to my old captains. They were great leaders, and if I can learn from them and apply it to my team, it’s not much work for me — just translating it to this team with new players.
Coach Konrad further emphasized the team’s motto, Nothing without work,
credited with their four state titles over the past decade. He referenced the All Blacks’ Legacy book, focusing on the importance of doing the little things. Konrad remarked, Cam does all the little things right. When you do that, your teammates notice, and it allows you to lead.
Brown proudly accepts his leadership position from his center-back position, asserting the honor it brings. His patience and perseverance paved the way for his inclusion in the proud tradition of Naperville North soccer. It’s a legacy. With a lot of great guys passing through this program — especially a few Division I players last year — stepping up to fill those roles is an honor.
