Days before Donald J. Trump’s anticipated return to the White House, Andrew Tate received encouraging news. Tate and his brother Tristan, known figures in the ‘manosphere’, were under investigation in Romania since 2022. They faced accusations of coercing women into pornography. Andrew additionally faced accusations of rape and abusing a minor.
As U.S. and British citizens, the Tates were initially forbidden from leaving Romania. This restriction persisted as prosecutors continued building their case. Yet, a text message from Tate in January hinted at an upcoming change. “I’ve been told I’ll be free soon but Trump needs to see me in Miami,” he wrote, indicating support from the Trump administration.
In February, an unusual directive emerged from Romania’s top government levels. Prosecutors were instructed to negotiate a solution with the Tates. Despite their initial reservations, they lifted the travel ban. Romania’s prime minister believed this move might satisfy Trump’s administration.
On February 27, Tate announced their return in a video, displaying their departure to Florida on a private jet. Their arrival in the U.S. stirred divisions among conservatives. Questions arose about possible White House involvement. The investigation revealed that backing from Trump administration officials was instrumental.
Through interviews and a review of extensive court documents and private communications, a comprehensive picture emerged. The Tates had transitioned from niche internet personalities to significant right-wing figures. Their release from Romania concluded Andrew’s longstanding efforts to establish connections with Trump advisers and family members.
