New AI Model Sparks Concerns
Anthropic has developed a new AI model called Mythos, which has raised concerns due to its ability to autonomously identify software vulnerabilities. Reporter fellows are being hosted by major news organizations with salaries paid by donor-supported AI journalism groups. Some outlets like Bloomberg, Time, NBC News, The Guardian, and the Los Angeles Times receive fellows from the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism.
The Tarbell Center pays its fellows between $60,000 and $80,000, with experienced journalists earning up to $110,000. The center emphasizes editorial independence, stating that donors have no control over the work produced. However, disclosure standards vary among news outlets. Some do not inform readers about the relationships between fellows and the Tarbell Center.

Instances of undisclosed relationships include a Time article by Harry Booth, who visited Anthropic’s California headquarters. The Verge’s coverage by Robert Hart on OpenAI and Anthropic also lacked disclosure of his fellowship.
Conversely, NBC News added an editorial note for Jared Perlo, who reports on the Future of Life Institute, acknowledging his funding from the Tarbell Center.
Tarbell’s Commitment to Transparency
The Tarbell Center, funded by entities like Coefficient Giving and supported by Anthropic investor Dustin Moskovitz, stresses transparency. They require clear disclosures on author pages. Exceptions exist when fellows are hired by their publication and no longer receive Tarbell funding.
