The National Football League (NFL) has taken significant strides towards improving player safety. In 2020, Guardian Caps were introduced. By 2022, they became mandatory for select positions during practices. Now, history sees a new chapter as Houston Texans safety Jalen Pitre becomes the first NFL Guardian athlete.
“The most important thing is promoting that football should be played correctly,” Pitre told Fox News Digital. “Guardian Cap is a sponsor for both the league and NCAA. It’s important for protection.” He believes in wearing them and encourages others to do so, extending the message to youth who don’t witness the safety measures used during practices.
“I want to make it home healthy, so why not take an extra step? Having a cap on allows your head to absorb hits better,” Pitre said.
Pitre’s decision was straightforward. As a safety, he frequently engages in physical play and immediately noticed the benefits. The caps are now a requirement during padded practices for all players except quarterbacks.
Pitre views Guardian Caps as part of the game’s evolution. He expects them to be integrated into standard helmet designs, becoming the norm for future football players.
Despite the challenge of convincing others, given the cap’s unfashionable appearance, Pitre believes performance will change perceptions. “If I’m making plays and doing well,” said Pitre, “it looks cool, making it easier for others to follow.”
