Baker Mayfield, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback, has expressed feelings of being “disrespected” after failing to secure a contract extension. He is determined to focus on playing his best football. Mayfield is in the last season of his three-year, $100 million contract.
“I’ve been pretty upfront about my feelings regarding Tampa as home for our family,” Mayfield said. He emphasized his desire to finalize a deal, setting a deadline to focus solely on football afterward. Despite gratitude for the opportunity in Tampa Bay, Mayfield believes he has provided significant leadership and valuable performance to the franchise.
Since being picked first in the 2018 NFL draft by Cleveland, Mayfield has revitalized his career in Tampa Bay, succeeding Tom Brady in 2023. He earned Pro Bowl honors in his first two seasons, guiding the Buccaneers to consecutive NFC South titles. Mayfield appeared as an MVP candidate in the early stages of last season when the team held a 6-2 record, although injuries disrupted progress.
Feeling undervalued, Mayfield expressed disappointment in the perceived lack of proper compensation. “That’s really the disappointing part, to feel undervalued after thinking you’ve earned it,” he explained. However, he remains motivated by football merits, not monetary incentives.
“Money should never be the motivation in football,” Mayfield stated. “It’s about helping the team win.” Setting a deadline for contract negotiations before training camp, Mayfield assured his teammates the issue would not distract him. He believes betting on himself is a familiar and motivating position, rallying his focus on team success.
Mayfield’s performance last year included 4,500 passing yards, 41 touchdown throws, a 71.4% completion rate, and a 106.8 passer rating. If he replicates such stats, the Buccaneers could face increased pay demands, ranging from $50-55 million.
Offensive lineman Ben Bredeson commended Mayfield’s consistency as a leader and friend, endorsing his unwavering commitment to football. “When he says it’s all about ball, he means it,” Bredeson remarked.
Defensive tackle Vita Vea is another player facing contract uncertainties. With a back injury keeping him out of practice, Mayfield expressed hopes for Vea’s recovery and a resolution to his contract situation. “Vita deserves that. He’s the anchor of our defense,” Mayfield noted.
