A devastating fire at a bar in northern Bangkok claimed 28 lives and left dozens injured, with several in critical condition. The tragedy unfolded late Sunday night when huge flames erupted from the venue’s entrance.
Atipat Wijan and his band were performing regularly at the beer hall where the fire occurred. He initially ignored a faint burning smell near the stage, a familiar occurrence as the breakers often tripped. Shortly after, a massive blaze engulfed the entrance, resembling a giant flamethrower, followed by an explosion.
Patrons smashed glass windows to flee, but many found their escape hampered by blocked or inaccessible exits. Atipat recounted the swift devastation, mourning the loss of two colleagues, including his girlfriend, in the chaos.
Thai authorities reported the fatality count by Monday evening, though they did not divulge the victims’ details or the cause of death. The fire marks another notable incident in Bangkok, a city famed as an international hotspot yet notorious for inadequate safety standards.
Investigators suggested the use of unsuitable materials in the venue’s soundproofing, implicating them in the rapid spread of the flames.
The incident raises urgent questions about safety practices in Bangkok’s entertainment venues, highlighting a need for stricter regulatory enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
