Ben Finney, a sophomore at Kouts, displays remarkable versatility on the baseball field. While he typically plays center field in travel ball, the team has opted to use senior Jesse Overholt in that position for the Mustangs. Despite this, coach Jason Dorshorst praises Finney for his skills as one of the top-ranked shortstops in the state. However, with Billy Miller and Landon Garrett already covering shortstop, Finney’s abilities shine elsewhere.
Finney’s adaptability impresses as he transitions from pitching, given the abundance of pitching options, to playing second base for two seasons. Recently, he moved to right field for the playoffs. Coach Dorshorst recalls Finney’s response to the switch, “I don’t think I brought my outfielder’s glove today, but I’ll figure it out.” His readiness and skill have earned him a commendable reputation as he performs well wherever needed.
As the leadoff hitter for the top-ranked Mustangs, Finney wields a formidable bat. He maintains a .366 batting average, with two home runs, eight triples, 23 RBIs, 51 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases. His performance in the 13-1 semistate final victory over Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian showcases Finney going 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park homer, two triples, four RBIs, and three runs scored.
Reflecting on recent form, Finney acknowledges a slump, but credits additional practice for rediscovering his swing. As a freshman, he hit .412, with 29 RBIs, 46 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases, aiming to exceed expectations and prove his value to coaches and teammates.
Finney’s impact is evident to his senior teammate Eli Harper. Harper describes him as “one of the most electric baseball players,” lauding Finney’s hard work and passion for the game. Behind seniors, Finney contributes energy and camaraderie. Harper believes Finney has prospects to evolve into an even better player and leader.
The Mustangs boast 31 consecutive victories since their season-opening loss. They’ve clinched the Porter County Conference round-robin title and the PCC Tournament title. Dorshorst highlights the significant growth the team has experienced since last season’s state championship loss at Victory Field, acknowledging their determination and preparedness for this year’s title game.
Dorshorst notes their composed approach post-sectionals victory, recognizing the underlying focus and job-at-hand mentality. The team’s recent semistate win was particularly anticlimactic despite its dominance. Their resolve for the upcoming championship game is clear.
As they gear up to face Northeast Dubois, Finney feels confident. “It feels good to be back,” he remarks. The team’s preparation and experience minimize nerves, ensuring a more assured performance compared to last year.
