Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., addressed his early support for former Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner on ‘Face the Nation’ without expressing regret. Sanders advocated for Platner’s withdrawal following a sexual assault allegation by a former girlfriend.
In conversation with host Margaret Brennan, Sanders was questioned on his promptness in reacting to the situation, which might have provided more time for Platner’s successor, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, to prepare his campaign. Sanders stated, ‘When we heard the serious allegations, I wanted to act swiftly. I and virtually all his backers encouraged him to step down, which he did.’
Brennan further inquired if Sanders was certain the other progressive candidates he endorsed had undergone thorough scrutiny. Sanders replied, ‘There are numerous candidates. I can’t confirm all have been thoroughly vetted. However, the individuals we back support the working class.’
Despite various controversies surrounding Platner, such as offensive social media posts, a Nazi-linked tattoo, alleged abusive behavior, and explicit exchanges with women while married, Sanders maintained his support. Platner denied serious wrongdoing but apologized for some past actions and viewpoints.
In June, when asked about reconsidering his endorsement after reports of explicit messages, Sanders responded bluntly, ‘Certainly not.’ Platner ultimately exited the race due to the sexual assault allegation, a move that Sanders and others had recommended.
Following Platner’s withdrawal, Maine Democrats chose Troy Jackson to run against Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who is campaigning for her sixth term. Concerns have surfaced regarding Jackson’s past abortion stance and issues related to his temperament, workplace behavior, and financial history.
This rapid vetting process has stirred debate among Democrats, with some expressing worries over the party’s internal divide. Rahm Emanuel, former Chicago Mayor, cautioned about the potential adverse impact of elevating progressive candidates in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.
In response, Sanders highlighted the significant divide within the Democratic Party, pointing out the ideological and financial contrasts between the establishment and progressive factions. Sanders remarked, ‘There is a strong division within the Democratic Party, with the establishment reliant on billionaire funds while the progressive movement gains momentum.’
