Comedian Bill Maher criticized far-left critics for targeting a Massachusetts lesbian bar that decided to go mask-optional one night a week. On his HBO show, “Real Time,” Maher discussed the story involving Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The bar recently faced backlash after lifting its COVID-era mask mandate for one night each week.
“Here’s what’s happening at the Last Ditch Bar,” Maher remarked. He described it as a progressive establishment with a mission statement inclusive of various identities. Maher humorously noted the order of priorities listed.
The Boston Globe reported that the bar struggled financially, partly due to patrons unable to afford the cover charge. The bar allowed entry without charge, welcoming homeless individuals, but not police officers. Despite this open policy, the business was not financially sustainable.
In response to financial difficulties, the bar decided to make Saturdays mask-optional, hoping to attract more patrons. Maher highlighted the extreme reaction from the community, mentioning threats and harsh criticisms directed at the bar’s owners.
The change sparked a community meeting where attendees expressed dissatisfaction with the policy shift. Some criticized the mediator’s role due to her race, exemplifying broader tensions.
Maher criticized the intolerance of the left towards the bar’s decision. He pointed out aggressive statements from critics and noted a persistent level of animosity.
NewsBusters Executive Editor Tim Graham commented on the story’s viral nature, attributing it to ongoing COVID-related tensions. Graham suggested that Maher is critical of liberals who preach tolerance while exhibiting intolerance.
Bill Maher, known for challenging various aspects of both the left and right, recently commented on the gap between liberal rhetoric and actions.
