John Mellencamp, Jay Leno, and Whitney Cummings will join as guest speakers when Bill Maher receives the Mark Twain Award for American Humor. The event is set for June 28 at the Kennedy Center. Details were sent to members via email, offering packages from $99 for a seat reservation to $1,500 for seating and access to receptions.
This announcement highlights a change: the center is now branding itself as the Kennedy Center, not the “Trump Kennedy Center.” Last month, a federal judge ruled that renaming the venue was illegal. Judge Christopher Cooper stated that the center should only bear President Kennedy’s name, as Congress originally designated.
A Kennedy spokesperson mentioned the possibility of appealing the decision. However, the center received an internal directive to proceed with steps, including removing Trump’s name. During Trump’s presidency, the Kennedy Center became central to his efforts against “woke” influences. He replaced leadership and filled the board with supporters. In response, some performers like Issa Rae and Renée Fleming canceled appearances.
Bill Maher becomes the 27th recipient of this prestigious award. Past honorees include Jay Leno, Steve Martin, and Tina Fey. Despite past disagreements with Trump, Maher is a comedian Republicans often find agreeable. He critiques Hollywood’s “woke” culture and interviews a range of figures, from Jane Fonda to Ben Shapiro.
Other attendees at the ceremony include comedian Louis C.K., resuming his career after allegations surfaced in 2017, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, known for his direct commentary leading to notable debates.
