California Governor Calls for 25th Amendment Action Following Trump Speech

California Governor Gavin Newsom triggered significant debate online after reacting to President Donald Trump’s speech about election integrity. Newsom argued that it might be time to invoke the 25th Amendment due to what he perceives as Trump’s cognitive impairment. He described Trump’s speech as the ‘rambling of a mad king’ lacking only a ‘tin foil hat.’

Newsom’s comments align with previous Democratic calls for assessing Trump’s cognitive health. However, these views stirred controversy, especially among those questioning the Democrats’ dismissal of similar concerns regarding former President Joe Biden.

The 25th Amendment, ratified in 1967, provides pathways for determining a president’s fitness for duty. The Cabinet can declare the president unfit, or Congress can form an independent committee to decide.

While Newsom has consistently defended President Biden, critics note the disparity in scrutiny between Trump and Biden’s cognitive capabilities. The Republican National Committee criticized this inconsistency, suggesting that Democrats ignored Biden’s mental acuity issues.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton expressed skepticism about Newsom’s motives, alleging that Trump exposed potential electoral fraud in California and nationwide.

Trump’s recent address outlined election integrity concerns, claiming China had stolen foreign data, revealing known vulnerabilities in U.S. elections, and calling attention to alleged ‘election fraud.’

Democrats, including Newsom, questioned Trump’s intentions, given the timing ahead of midterm elections. They argued Trump’s actions aim to rig the 2026 election due to fears of losing.

Harry Sisson, a Democratic influencer, and Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., supported Newsom’s view, asserting Trump’s unfitness and calling for the 25th Amendment’s enactment.

Rep. Ansari previously advocated for a formal review of any president’s cognitive state, involving past presidents, physicians, and experts. She claimed Trump poses a national security threat.

Newsom has not commented on whether he supports Ansari’s proposed bill for independent evaluation.

Conservatives worry over the ramifications of invoking the 25th Amendment. Joe Patterson, a California assemblyman, and other conservatives view this proposal as potentially destabilizing for democracy.

The debate highlights ongoing political tensions surrounding presidential fitness and electoral integrity.
