California Gubernatorial Race: Democrat Becerra vs. Republican Hilton

The upcoming California gubernatorial race will feature Democrat Xavier Becerra against Republican Steve Hilton. This election presents stark contrasts in political ideologies, with Becerra looking to affirm California’s liberal stance and Hilton aiming for a significant shift in direction.

Candidate Backgrounds

Steve Hilton, once a Fox News commentator, has secured enough votes to compete in the general election, according to The Associated Press. Hilton gained backing from President Donald Trump and positions himself as an outsider committed to changing the state’s trajectory.

Xavier Becerra, formerly California’s attorney general and health secretary under President Joe Biden, aims to succeed Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Becerra is noted for his resistance against Trump’s policies during his tenure as attorney general, filing over 120 legal actions against the federal government to protect state interests.

Voter Dynamics and Challenges

California’s electorate composition poses challenges for Hilton. Republicans make up about 25% of registered voters, overshadowed by Democrats at 45%. Although Trump’s endorsement was beneficial during the primaries, it could hinder Hilton in the general election.

Becerra is known for his defiance against Trump’s interventions in California, including environmental controls and support for transgender athletes. He’s keen on maintaining these policies if elected governor.

Primary Race Dynamics

The primary election process was drawn-out due to California’s vote-counting system, which offers grace for mailed ballots postmarked by Election Day. The Associated Press confirmed Becerra’s advancement to the general election later in the week after primary voting.

Hilton faced competition from Democrat Tom Steyer, who invested $215 million into his campaign but failed to surpass Hilton’s lead. Steyer subsequently endorsed Becerra, urging unity among Democratic voters.

Affordability Concerns

Affordability remains a critical concern among Californians. Hilton proposes tax relief on the first $100,000 earned by residents, a housing loan program for first-time buyers, and tuition freezes. Becerra intends to declare states of emergency to tackle energy costs and housing shortages, along with freezing home insurance rates.

Immigrant Backgrounds

Hilton moved from the United Kingdom to California in 2012, gaining citizenship in 2021. He relates his journey to past governors like Arnold Schwarzenegger, emphasizing his outsider status.

Becerra, born in Sacramento to Mexican immigrant parents, aligns his familial history with his campaign journey. His potential election would make him California’s first Latino governor in over a century.
