New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo acknowledged that his absence from carrying the ball against the New Orleans Saints was a direct consequence of his fumble in the previous week’s game against the Washington Commanders.
Skattebo commented, “I got punished for what I did last week, and I understand, so I got to be ready when coach calls my name — and that wasn’t today.” He admitted he did not expect zero carries but anticipated reduced playing time. Coach’s message to him was to maintain focus and effort. “They understand the type of player I am, and I’ve just got to continue to do my job and do it to the best of my ability,” he added.
However, not all share Skattebo’s perspective. Giants legend Tiki Barber, appearing on the WFAN Giants postgame show, suggested Skattebo’s reduced role resulted from broader issues beyond the fumble.
There have been a lot of negative plays for him,Barber stated.Misreading the run game or being too fast in the run game and other essential aspects matter for being on the field during 3rd Down, knowing protection responsibility…those little things are considered ‘busts’ that aren’t obvious to the average fan. I think there’s been a lot of those for Cam Skattebo this season…he presented it as the fumble…I think it was more than that. In fact, I know it was more than that.
The timing is critical as the Giants recently released former Pro Bowler Najee Harris. Although Tyrone Tracy Jr. has shown moments of promise, his inconsistency remains evident. The team clearly needs a reliable primary running back.
Despite Skattebo being the Giants’ best running back, his on- and off-the-field challenges have not served him well this season. If Barber’s observations hold truth, Skattebo needs to demonstrate growth and reliability, thus reassuring head coach John Harbaugh of his value and focus since the start of the season.
