The 2027 Chicago mayoral election is set for February 23. Currently, nine candidates have announced their intention to run, though more are expected to join the race in the coming months. The candidacy list includes both seasoned political figures and newcomers. The incumbent, Mayor Brandon Johnson, has yet to announce whether he will seek reelection.
The process for collecting nominating petitions begins on July 28. Candidates must submit at least 12,500 signatures to appear on the ballot, a requirement that has historically led to intense petition challenges. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote on February 23, a runoff between the top two vote-getters will occur on April 6, with the inauguration scheduled for May.
Announced Candidates
Willie Wilson: Businessman Willie Wilson is making his fourth attempt at the mayor’s office. Known for his conservative stance, Wilson gained prominence as an early African American McDonald’s franchise owner and for his philanthropic efforts, including substantial gas giveaways. He argues for an independent approach to governance.
Alexi Giannoulias: Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has officially entered the race. With significant support from trades unions and a substantial campaign fund, he presents a strong challenge. Giannoulias has been outspoken against some of Mayor Johnson’s policies, capitalizing on his name recognition and financial backing.
Matthew Brewer: Former interim CEO of the Chicago Housing Authority, Matthew Brewer, has declared his candidacy, emphasizing his South Side roots and experience in public service. He aims to address perceived inefficiencies at City Hall.
George Cardenas: Former Alderman and current Cook County Board of Review Commissioner George Cardenas has joined the race. Cardenas promises efficient government, arguing against budget cuts as a solution for fiscal balance.
Mike Quigley: U.S. Representative Mike Quigley is running for mayor, building on his experiences in Congress and as a former Cook County commissioner. He has positioned himself against Johnson’s economic policies, advocating for budget austerity before increasing tax requests from citizens.
Susana Mendoza: Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is seeking the mayoral seat as an alternative to her current post. Her campaign focuses on addressing Chicago’s financial issues and offering opposition to Johnson’s progressive strategies.
Liam Stanton: As a political newcomer and tech entrepreneur, Stanton proposes term limits for elected officials.
Joe Holberg: Entrepreneur Joe Holberg, who declared his candidacy early, portrays himself as an outsider with a determination shaped by personal experiences of overcoming hardship.
John Kelly: Veteran lobbyist John Kelly, known for representing various influential figures, has entered the race. His experience spans working with top political figures and significant corporations.
Lisa Nee: Cardiologist and whistleblower Lisa Nee has announced her candidacy. Known for her advocacy in veterans’ healthcare, Nee positions herself as a reformist political outsider.
