Mike Shirley, the Chicago White Sox amateur scouting director, has resigned. The organization announced this on Saturday before their team faced off against the St. Louis Cardinals, ending in a 6-5 victory for the White Sox.
Shirley, in his seventh season in the role, faced allegations of making inappropriate racial and sexist comments. The Athletic reported these claims involved remarks about coworkers.
An anonymous tip led to Shirley’s administrative leave following accusations of misconduct during the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California, in August. This event is a scouting stage for high school players, attended by various scouting directors and other personnel.

In the past, another internal investigation scrutinized Shirley after a former employee’s anonymous tip. This previous report accused Shirley of inappropriate behavior toward scouts from underrepresented groups. Despite scrutiny, no disciplinary action was taken when an investigation found no wrongdoing.
Appointed as the amateur scouting director in September 2019, Shirley previously worked as an assistant scouting director and cross-checker from 2010-2018. His recent focus was on the MLB Draft, with the White Sox holding the top pick for the third time in franchise history. Shirley aimed to utilize a record Draft pool of $20,489,500.
The White Sox selected shortstop Roch Cholowsky from UCLA. However, Cholowsky was sidelined for the rest of the season due to right wrist soreness.
