Chinese officials perceive President Trump’s claims of election interference by China in the 2020 U.S. elections as motivated more by domestic political strategy than foreign policy concerns.
In May, President Trump and China’s leader, Xi Jinping, showed a semblance of camaraderie during events at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The two leaders were seen walking through the secluded gardens of the leadership compound, surrounded by vibrant flora.
During a state banquet, President Trump expressed friendship towards Mr. Xi, noting the exceptional hospitality he received. He described the reception as unparalleled, paving the way to significant trade agreements. Plans were even made for Mr. Xi to visit Washington in September.
However, President Trump’s tone shifted dramatically during a Thursday night address. He accused China of executing “the largest compromise of election data in history.” He announced the release of declassified documents intended to demonstrate China’s interference, although the documents did not offer substantial new evidence of Beijing’s involvement.
U.S. intelligence agencies maintain there is no proof that China manipulated the results of the 2020 election.
