After concluding last season with a 7-6 record, Clemson aimed for a strong comeback this year under Dabo Swinney. The team boasts an impressive wide receiver duo in T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. They revamped their roster by acquiring top transfers like Chris Johnson Jr., Elliot Washington II, and London Merritt. Their recruiting class also ranked 20th nationally. Despite these efforts, Clemson failed to close the competitive gap with LSU, suffering a significant defeat last Saturday night.
During Lane Kiffin’s inaugural game as LSU’s head coach, his team crushed Clemson 51-10. Clemson’s offense managed only 145 total yards, intensifying pressure on Swinney. His position has become more precarious following this loss, given last season’s disappointment.
Reports from CBS Sports’ Robby Kalland suggest Clemson has a financial incentive to act soon. Terminating Swinney’s contract during the 2026 season could save Clemson $3 million due to a declining buyout structure: $57 million before year’s end versus $60 million if they wait until 2027.
Swinney, despite current challenges, remains a significant figure in Clemson football history. He led Clemson to two national championships, three Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards, nine ACC titles, and an overall record of 187-54, reflecting a .776 winning percentage. However, with the sport’s unforgiving nature, continued losses might push Clemson closer to contemplating a buyout.
Next, Clemson prepares to face Georgia Southern at home, followed by games against ACC rival UNC, Cal, Miami, Charleston Southern, Virginia Tech, and Florida State—all before November starts.
