Connecting with Students in the Age of Technology

Two decades ago, when I started my journey as a political science professor, my primary challenge was to calm a room buzzing with talkative undergraduates. Now, the atmosphere has shifted. I frequently enter classrooms filled with silence as students focus on their phones, seemingly oblivious to peers sitting next to them.

This changing behavior reflects broader societal trends where technology increasingly dominates our interactions. The challenge today is not about managing lively discussions but fostering genuine connections among students who often feel isolated despite being surrounded by others.

My teaching strategy has evolved to address this. I emphasize the importance of human interaction and encourage students to engage beyond their digital screens. Interaction exercises and group discussions help students realize the value of face-to-face communication and building interpersonal connections.

Incorporating these approaches aims to enhance their educational experience, helping students connect not only with the course material but also with each other. This focus strengthens their sense of community and enhances their overall wellbeing.
