Controversial Call Overrides Saints’ Defensive Touchdown Against Lions

The New Orleans Saints believed they had scored a defensive touchdown against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. This assumption proved incorrect following a pivotal review by officials.

Early in the second quarter, with the Lions leading 7-0, New Orleans defensive end Chase Young forced a fumble from Detroit quarterback Jared Goff. Saints safety Jonas Sanker recovered the ball and carried it into the end zone, initially putting New Orleans on the scoreboard.

However, after a closer inspection, officials determined that Goff had initiated a throwing motion. Mike Pereira, an NFL rules analyst for Fox Sports, clarified that Goff’s intent to throw the ball forward resulted in the play being deemed an incomplete pass. “Throwing motion starts, hand going up, then he’s hit, ball comes loose. His intent was to throw it forward. Since that motion had already started, that’s going to be an incomplete pass, no matter where it lands,” Pereira explained.

The decision to consider Goff’s intent, despite the ball traveling backward, highlights the ambiguity in such rulings. This call removed the Saints’ touchdown from the board, and the Lions eventually punted on that drive, maintaining their 7-0 lead into halftime.

The overturn of the fumble may stand as one of the season’s most confusing sequences, given the initial ruling and how rules are interpreted regarding quarterback intent.
