Councilwoman Mary Brown, representing the 3rd District, recently passed away. Her colleagues and friends honor her as a committed advocate for her community in Steel City, where her financial expertise significantly advanced beneficial projects. Council President Linda Barnes Caldwell announced Brown’s passing and described it as a tremendous loss for Gary Common Council and the entire city.
Brown had served Gary for nearly 26 years, elected initially as the third district representative in November 1999. She graduated from Emerson High School and was a long-time member of New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Her career included roles as a cost analyst at U.S. Steel and a customer service manager at the Gary Sanitary District, which she resigned from in June 2018.
The Gary Sanitary District expressed its gratitude for Brown’s service, noting her integrity, passion, and dedication to the city’s betterment.
Mayor Eddie Melton praised Brown as a fierce advocate for Gary’s residents, acknowledging her unwavering commitment to public service. He emphasized that her legacy will be celebrated for generations.
Brown’s most notable achievement was the Tolleston Opportunity Campus, a $45 million investment that includes the Gary Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, and a Methodist Hospitals clinic. Her project was seen as a citywide initiative rather than just a district effort.
Council members, including Dwight Williams and Lori Latham, spoke about Brown’s dedication to quality of life projects and her focus on the Tolleston area. They admired her preference for community benefits over financial gain.
Councilwoman Marian Ivey noted Brown’s commitment to the RailCats’ U.S. Steel Yard stadium project, even when unpopular. She regarded Brown’s enduring dedication and courage as inspiring.
Council Vice President Darren Washington valued Brown’s financial insights, which aided city projects and ensured informed decision-making. Councilman Dwayne Halliburton appreciated Brown’s leadership and advocacy.
Myles Tolliver and Kenneth Whisenton shared heartfelt tributes to Brown, recognizing her influence on the council and community. State Sen. Mark Spencer and Lake County Councilman Ron Brewer also spoke about her lasting impact.
State Rep. Ragen Hatcher reflected on Brown’s tireless service, emphasizing her contributions to the city and the council. Her dedication will always be remembered.
