David Lee Roth’s return to the stage this summer has encountered unexpected setbacks. Several planned tour dates were abruptly canceled, leaving fans speculating about the cause. As the news circulated, Sammy Hagar extended public support to his former Van Halen bandmate with a heartfelt message.
“Hey Dave, Sammy here. I just got a call from Michael Anthony while enjoying my favorite cocktail,” Hagar shared, holding his signature margarita. “I’m really sorry about your tour getting canceled. I hope you’re okay and that there’s no health issue.”
Shows in Colorado, Iowa, Kentucky, and Illinois have been canceled, with no explanation provided. Only Roth’s concerts in July have been affected; his scheduled performances for August and September, including the August 7th show in Sturgis, South Dakota, are still bookable via Ticketmaster and his official website.
Hagar praised Roth and expressed regret over the cancellations, stating, “Mike and I love that you’re out there supporting the greatest band we were part of. It’s disappointing. Supporting and continuing our band’s music is so important.”
Reflecting on Van Halen’s unique synergy, Hagar noted, “You, me, Mikey, Al, Ed; we can’t be replaced.” He invited Roth to join him and Michael Anthony at their Las Vegas residency in September, encouraging Roth to perform or host.
“Come to Vegas in September,” Hagar urged. “Join us on stage, do your thing. You’re always entertaining.” He concluded his message with warm wishes, “Hope you’re well. God bless, brother.”
In his video post’s caption, Hagar emphasized his sincere intent, writing, “I hope the news about Dave isn’t true. Whether or not it is, my message is heartfelt. We need to continue performing live to preserve real music.” Hagar highlighted Van Halen’s legacy as authentic live music for current and future fans.
The display of camaraderie marked a shift in the long-standing rivalry between the two rock icons. Both Roth and Hagar held the position of Van Halen’s frontman at different times. Roth left the band in 1985, prompting Hagar to take over until 1996, and making a brief return from 2003 to 2005. Roth resumed his role in 2006 until the band’s conclusion in 2020.
Roth and Hagar famously feuded but toured together briefly in 2002, only for tensions to resurface. Roth’s canceled dates add another twist to his comeback following a 2021 retirement announcement and subsequent Las Vegas residency cancellation due to COVID-19. He returned to the stage in 2025, continuing into 2026, but has remained silent about the current cancellations and Hagar’s invite.
