A House Democrat has introduced 26 new articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump. Representative Steve Cohen, a Democrat from Tennessee, presented these articles on September 24. This move came shortly after another impeachment attempt by Democratic Representative Al Green was rejected.
Articles of Impeachment Overview
Cohen’s resolution includes broad allegations against Trump. These include abuse of power, violation of the oath of office, and other misconduct. The articles cover a range of issues from immigration policies to military actions and presidential pardons. They also address Trump’s dealings with the media and financial benefits from his presidency.
The articles specifically accuse Trump of undermining democracy and defying court orders on immigration. They also allege misuse of federal funds and attacking press freedom.
Contrasting Green’s and Cohen’s Efforts
Green’s earlier resolution focused narrowly on immigration enforcement. It accused Trump of abusing powers related to immigration operations where civilians were killed. Democratic leaders did not support Green’s narrower focus and preferred following formal investigations before considering impeachment.
Cohen’s broader resolution includes allegations on various fronts, like deploying military forces against U.S. cities and profiting personally from the presidency.
Political Context and Challenges
“Trump is clearly the most impeachable President our country has ever endured,” Cohen stated in a press release.
Cohen acknowledges the challenges of advancing this effort, especially in a House controlled by Republicans. The earlier vote showed that even Democrats are not fully united on pursuing another impeachment process at present.
Historical Context
Cohen and Green have both sought Trump’s impeachment in the past. Cohen introduced articles in 2017, while Green accused Trump of promoting bigotry. Trump was impeached twice by the House during his first term, but the Senate acquitted him both times.
