Democratic Candidate Dr. Annie Andrews to Face Sen. Lindsey Graham in South Carolina Senate Race

The Democratic Party in South Carolina has selected Dr. Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, as its candidate in the upcoming Senate race. Andrews emerged victorious from a tough primary contest and now prepares to challenge the incumbent, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., in November. Graham is pursuing his fifth term.

Dr. Andrews is well-known in South Carolina’s political circles. Since the 1990s, the state has not elected a Democrat to the Senate. Former Sen. Fritz Hollings, who left office in 2005, was the last Democrat to serve in the Senate from South Carolina.

Andrews has been outspoken about her intentions, focusing on removing Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. She pledged to lead efforts to impeach and remove him from office, despite the Senate’s role being limited to acting as the final step in impeachment processes.

In a published op-ed earlier this year for MS Now, Andrews implicated Kennedy as a long-standing proponent of the anti-vaccine movement. He has allegedly contributed to communities falling below the immunity thresholds necessary to prevent outbreaks of diseases like measles. Andrews emphasized that changing leadership abruptly does not immediately restore public trust.

Meanwhile, Graham undergoing a six-way primary underscores a test of former President Donald Trump’s influence. Businessman Mark Lynch is among the primary challengers and was recently supported by Trump’s former official, Joe Kent, who portrayed Lynch as a viable alternative to Graham.

As the political landscape in South Carolina evolves, both parties brace for a significant election process this coming November.
