Potential Candidates for 2028
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stands out as a notable contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. However, a recent poll suggests she would face a tough primary battle. The Public Sentiment Institute conducted a survey between July 25-29 among 762 likely voters in Michigan, highlighting former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as the frontrunner with 24.2% support.
Undecided voters accounted for 21.7%, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the early race dynamics. Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff followed Buttigieg with 13.9%, while Ocasio-Cortez garnered 10.7%. California Governor Gavin Newsom received 10.0%, and former Vice President Kamala Harris had 5.1% support. Other candidates in the poll included Illinois Governor JB Pritzker at 3.8% and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro at 3.6%.
The poll’s margin of error is 4 points at a 95% confidence level.
These figures reveal Ocasio-Cortez as a significant figure yet indicate her trailing behind other prominent rivals in a crowded field. Newsweek sought commentary from Ocasio-Cortez’s office through email.
Prediction Markets Indicate a Competitive Race
Early prediction markets reflect no dominant frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in 2028. Platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi showed varying odds for candidates, indicating uncertainty about the final lineup and evolving Democratic voter priorities.
While prediction markets provide insights into public sentiment and trader expectations, they are not polls and do not directly measure voter support.
As of Saturday morning, Polymarket odds placed Newsom at a 19% chance, Ocasio-Cortez and Ossoff at 14%, Harris at 9%, Buttigieg and Shapiro at 5%, and Pritzker at 1%. Meanwhile, Kalshi showed Newsom at 18%, Ossoff at 15%, Ocasio-Cortez at 13%, Harris at 9.3%, Buttigieg at 5.5%, Shapiro at 4.5%, and Pritzker at 2.7%.
Statements from Potential 2028 Candidates
Harris has been active in states like Michigan and South Carolina. In response to a query by Reverend Al Sharpton, she said she might consider running. She emphasized her experience as Vice President and proximity to the presidency.
Newsom, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, expressed he isn’t currently planning to run but acknowledges the possibility exists.
During a conversation with David Axelrod, Ocasio-Cortez stated her focus is on transformative policies rather than individual ambitions.
Ossoff confirmed to CNN that he doesn’t intend to run in 2028, focusing instead on his Georgia reelection campaign, which the Cook Political Report rates as “Lean Democratic.”
