DSA’s Growing Influence
Megan Romer, co-chair of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), recently participated in an interview on Fox News Sunday. Her discussion centered on the organization’s platform, sparking criticism from both Democrats and Republicans on social media. The DSA has experienced a surge in victories during Democratic primaries, promising to strengthen their presence in Congress after this year’s elections. Concerns Over Political Platform
Despite their successes, concerns about the DSA’s platform persist among some Democrats. During Romer’s Fox News interview, host Shannon Bream questioned her about DSA’s support for policies that included abolishing the Senate, presidency, and Supreme Court; eliminating Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); abolishing borders; granting amnesty to those in the U.S. illegally; defunding the Pentagon; and transferring ownership of large corporations to the public. Romer affirmed these policies as part of DSA’s long-term vision, which has provoked criticism.
Bipartisan Criticism of DSA Policies
Both Democrats and Republicans have voiced their concerns. Democratic Senate candidate Annie Andrews from South Carolina described the platform as “unhinged” and disconnected from American values. Similarly, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman criticized the platform, likening it to anarchy. Activist Shannon Watts expressed worries about the alienation of moderate voters.
“This isn’t a big tent—it’s anarchy,” wrote Fetterman on X.
On the Republican side, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Senator Ashley Moody of Florida criticized the DSA, stressing that their ideas could harm America.
DSA Responds to Backlash
In response, DSA issued a statement emphasizing their long-term vision for society. Their program aims to reduce crime, provide good-paying jobs, and make essential services like rent affordable. They assert that failure to adopt these policies could lead to political defeat for Democrats, who may continue to serve corporate interests.
Understanding Democratic Socialism
DSA advocates for democratic socialism—an ideology focused on decentralized socialism within a democratic framework. They support progressive policies such as single-payer healthcare and the Green New Deal. A key distinction from other forms of socialism is their commitment to achieving their goals through democratic institutions and competitive elections. Merriam-Webster defines democratic socialism as a “political movement calling for the establishment of a decentralized socialist economic system within a democratically run political system.”
DSA Platform Details
The DSA platform includes expanded public resources, universal healthcare, publicly owned housing, and a green economy. In foreign policy, they call for defunding the Department of Defense, recognizing Palestinian rights, and abolishing ICE. They also push for electoral reform, including the abolition of the Electoral College and support public ownership of major corporations.
Sociopolitical Landscape and Polls
According to a June poll by The Economist and YouGov, 32% of Americans view socialism positively, while 39% view it negatively. Additionally, 44% prefer capitalism, and 45% said they would not support a Democratic socialist candidate. Despite mixed views, DSA-backed candidates like Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Melat Kiros have won significant battles in Democratic primaries.
