Primary Win in Missouri’s 4th Congressional District
Jordan Herrera, an attorney, Air Force veteran, and former Missouri assistant attorney general, claimed victory in the Democratic nomination for Missouri’s newly redrawn 4th Congressional District. Herrera defeated Hartzell Gray, a democratic socialist with substantial national attention, in a seven-way primary contest.
Herrera will face Republican Rep. Mark Alford in the GOP-favored district during the November elections, sidestepping Gray’s left-wing challenge to the Democratic establishment.
The Campaign Dynamics
The district, which includes parts of Kansas City and extends into suburban and rural Missouri, remains solidly Republican despite recent adjustments to the map. Gray’s campaign exceeded financial expectations, raising around $250,000 by mid-July, compared to Herrera’s $40,000. Despite this financial edge, Gray was unable to secure the nomination.
The Kansas City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America endorsed Gray, acknowledging his refusal to accept corporate funds and his advocacy for Medicare for All and tenant protections.
A Campaign Strategy Focused on Social Media
Gray leveraged social media and small-dollar donors to challenge traditional party mechanisms. His appearance on Hasan Piker’s Twitch stream generated significant donations, transforming the low-profile primary into a focal point for socialist interests within the party.
These online platforms boosted his fundraising, with over $30,000 received after his stream appearance.
Implications of the November Elections
Gray’s campaign strategy reflects a growing reliance on independent activist networks and social media to build support. This primary test case highlights potential shifts in Democratic circles towards more socialist-leaning policies.
