Former Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr made headlines when he retired from the NFL after the 2024 season. Despite rumors about a comeback to fill quarterback roles for several teams, he stayed retired until recently. Carr has now joined the UCLA football team as a special advisor to coach Bob Chesney.
The announcement came from UCLA on Monday. Carr, a four-time Pro Bowler, will support coach Chesney and the UCLA staff, focusing on the team’s quarterbacks. He expressed his enthusiasm in a press release, stating, “I’ve known UCLA general manager Darrick Yray for a long time and have great respect for his career accomplishments. I am eager to contribute to coach Chesney and the team by sharing my experiences.”

According to UCLA, Carr will assist with game-planning strategy while working closely with the quarterbacks. His experience in the NFL is significant. Carr’s 11-year career included achievements like 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions, boasting a 92.8 passer rating.
Carr’s college career was exceptional too. At Fresno State, he racked up 12,843 yards and 113 touchdowns over four years, despite only starting for three of them. In his last year, the Bulldogs went 20-6, with Carr throwing for 5,083 yards and 50 touchdowns. He won the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year twice and received the 2013 Sammy Baugh Trophy, which honors the nation’s top passer annually.
