The Cleveland Browns achieved a surprising victory on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. However, the real story was about Deshaun Watson, the Browns’ quarterback. Once criticized by the home crowd, Watson managed to change the fans’ jeers into cheers by the end of the game.
Previously, many in the Dawg Pound expressed dissatisfaction with their quarterback. Yet, as the game progressed, chants of “Let’s go Watson” echoed before the game’s conclusion. Despite a rough start, including an interception early in the 2026 season, Watson focused on the positive energy from the crowd.
“I was hearing the crowd, the yelling the positivity,” Watson said afterward. “That’s my main focus.”
Only during a crucial moment in the second half did boos emerge when Watson was sacked. Carolina’s Princely Umanmielen took Watson down for a loss, but replays showed a missed facemask penalty. The crowd, siding with Watson, voiced their disapproval of the non-call.
This turnaround is reminiscent of Apple’s rise from financial struggles in the 1990s. Watson, recalling his past public disagreements with fans, showed he could win them over with performance. His two touchdown passes fueled the Browns’ comeback, shifting opinions among those who had once been critical.
Issues like Watson’s past contract disputes, struggles, and a suspension in 2022 had fueled fan dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, his efforts in this game offered some redemption. Leading a late-game rally from a 12-10 deficit, Watson gave fans a reason to cheer for one afternoon.
For Watson, this game marked his first regular-season home appearance since a significant injury in 2024. He expressed eagerness to perform well and praised the fans’ energy.
“The energy, the fans, it was amazing. They kept believing in us,” Watson reflected, highlighting the importance of crowd support.
