The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a stern warning concerning a migrant caravan that crossed into Mexico. This group is progressing northward, aiming to reach the U.S.-Mexico border.
DHS informed Fox News that U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is actively engaged with international partners to monitor the caravan’s movements and developments. USBP emphasized that the border remains closed and secured under President Trump’s and Homeland Secretary Mullin’s leadership.
As of Monday, the caravan comprises hundreds of individuals mainly hailing from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Haiti. The caravan started from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Sept. 20.
USBP highlighted that the longstanding policy of ‘catch and release’ is over, with the border sealed shut, countering previous open border policies.
The agency further stated that any illegal entry attempts into the United States would result in apprehension, prosecution, and deportation.
The caravan’s progress comes amid a heated midterm election period, where immigration policies are prominent in political debates. President Trump has pushed for increased deportations and crackdowns on illegal immigration, reporting historically low levels since his tenure began last year.
Reports indicate that migrants are seeking better economic opportunities as an incentive to reach the U.S., with individuals like Honduran migrant José Zelaya clarifying to the EFE news agency, as reported by the Houston Chronicle, that the journey is fueled by ‘hunger and need.’ Zelaya travels with seven relatives and explained that the caravan lacks organized leadership.
DHS reasserted the status of the U.S.-Mexico border as ‘sealed shut,’ focusing on preventing illegal crossings as officials continue to monitor the migrant movement through Mexico.
