The Dodgers, who have won the World Series twice consecutively, sent three promising prospects to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Skubal, a back-to-back American Cy Young winner. The Tigers are receiving outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers Brady Smith and River Ryan.
Hope, 21, is ranked as the No. 25 prospect in baseball by MLB. Skubal, recognized as an elite pitcher, made a notable achievement by delivering his 1,000th strikeout pitch against Taylor Ward of the Baltimore Orioles. This occurred during the first inning at Comerica Park on July 29, 2026, in Detroit, Michigan.

Skubal underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery in May after seven starts for the Tigers. Despite the surgery, he missed only six months and returned to pitching by mid-June. This season, Skubal holds a 7-5 record as a starter. Although he is owed the remainder of his $32 million salary, he will not be eligible for a qualifying offer due to the timing of the trade.
The Dodgers, currently leading the National League West with a 69-42 record and ten games ahead of the nearest competitors, remain favorites to win a third consecutive World Series title. Their acquisition of Skubal further solidifies their position, leaving other teams potentially less hopeful for postseason triumphs.
Tigers fans are upset by this transaction, especially with their team sitting only 2.5 games out of the American League Wild Card. Skubal made his final appearance for the Tigers on July 29 and may debut for the Dodgers soon, as they face the Chicago Cubs in an upcoming series.
