DOJ Issues Subpoenas to Rep. Omar’s Family in Federal Investigation

Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, is facing increased legal examination. Federal investigations are looking into her immigration history, financial disclosures, and a recent raid on her home. Fox News correspondent David Spunt reported that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued subpoenas to Omar’s family members. Legal expert Andrew Cherkasky discussed the potential consequences of these investigations with host Harris Faulkner.

The raid on Omar’s residence in Washington, D.C., included the seizure of a cell phone as part of a criminal fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork. Investigators have issued more than a dozen subpoenas after searching her home.

The probe is examining whether Omar’s family provided false information about her age when she immigrated to the United States in 1995. Omar became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000, reportedly when she was 17, which made her eligible for automatic citizenship through her father. Officials are questioning the accuracy of her birth date provided on her application.

There are questions about Omar’s age due to her congressional staff’s request for a Minnesota public library to change her birth year in historical records. The library request happened months after she took office, changing the year from 1981 to 1982.

Agents from the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the raid, according to a source cited by Fox News. During the raid, Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, expressed confidence in his wife’s innocence. “My wife came here when she was 12 years old as a child war refugee,” Mynett said, citing no concerns regarding the investigation.

Authorities are also scrutinizing paperwork from Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, to see if his application to enter the U.S. contained false information. Omar has refuted any allegations of wrongdoing and accused the Trump administration of politicizing federal law enforcement for its benefit.

“For a decade, Donald Trump has relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with inflammatory rhetoric,” Omar’s office stated. “Now, those attacks have led to an unnecessary federal raid. The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong.”

The investigation into Omar extends beyond her immigration history. A separate inquiry focuses on her federal financial disclosures. This financial review is not related to the raid on her residence.

Fox News has reached out to Rep. Omar’s office for further comments.
