The legacy of Dolly Parton, famous for her contribution to country music and philanthropy, continues to flourish in Alabama. After her passing at age 80, residents are rallying behind her Imagination Library through a specialty license plate. This initiative aims to support the distribution of free books to children statewide.
Imagination Library’s Growing Support
Kaelyn Christian, Alabama’s state director for the Imagination Library, reported a surge in pre-commitments for the license plate. Initially at 40, the number climbed to over 550, quickly approaching the target of 1,000 needed for production. Christian expressed confidence in reaching this milestone.
The license plate is more than a way to memorialize Parton; it provides crucial funding for local programs.
Each plate contributes approximately $50 annually to the Imagination Library in the county of registration. This creates a sustainable financial source, helping the program distribute free books every month.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
In 1995, Parton established the Imagination Library to foster a love of reading in children from birth to age five. Children receive a free book monthly, totaling up to 60 books. Inspired by her father, Parton aimed to provide children the education he lacked.
Since its inception, the program has gifted over 300 million books globally. In Alabama, more than 114,000 children have enrolled. Christian shared stories of families who benefited, including one whose child now reads 200 books yearly.
Community and Family Impact
The initiative has emotional and educational impacts. Christian noted her son’s excitement in receiving books addressed “from Ms. Dolly.” The program often touches families who previously could not afford books.
Local partners, whom Christian described as the ‘boots on the ground,’ are pivotal. They enroll children, promote the program, and fund it locally. The license plate helps these partners sustain their efforts long term.
Statewide Expansion By 2025
In a cooperative effort, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced a state expansion of the Imagination Library. By early 2025, the program achieved coverage in all 67 counties. The state provides half of the financial support needed for participating children.
