The decline in Drake Maye’s performance continued on Sunday, leading to his removal from the game with about eight minutes left. Coach Mike Vrabel decided it was necessary, as the Patriots faced a daunting 35-6 defeat against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Maye’s errors were glaring, including two interceptions and a lost fumble, which contributed to Vrabel’s evident concern. New England has been on shaky ground, and Maye’s turnovers have only heightened the issues.
Vrabel acknowledged the need for the team to improve significantly, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the football. “We have to take care of the football,” he stated. He highlighted the necessity for making safer and wiser decisions during plays.
However, Maye’s decision-making has been problematic. He has committed seven turnovers in the season already. This includes three against the Seattle Seahawks and another one against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Maye reflected on these struggles, admitting the need to assess his performance critically. “I’ve got to look myself in the mirror and take this as a turning point,” he noted, pointing out the offensive failures as unacceptable for three consecutive weeks.
Despite these challenges, Maye remains determined to lead his team. “I got to start with myself and then lead these guys and we got to get back after it,” he mentioned. Yet, with a record of 1-2, pressure is mounting. Questions about Maye’s position within the team have emerged.
Support for Maye comes from within the team. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez expressed unwavering backing, stating, “Everybody in that locker room believes in him, and that’s really all that matters.” He assured that the team stands behind Maye as their quarterback.
This season presents a tougher schedule for the Patriots compared to last year, and roster changes like releasing Stefon Diggs and acquiring A.J. Brown have yet to yield success due to injuries.
CBS analyst Adam Archuleta remarked on the challenges of the NFL, stressing that the Patriots and Maye must improve through effort and perseverance. Maye’s past performances, such as last year’s game against the Buffalo Bills, offer a glimpse of his potential.
The Patriots are set to face the Bills next Sunday, hoping for a turnaround.
