MLB’s Ambitious Plan for a National Park Baseball Game

Major League Baseball (MLB) is considering an unusual new venue for its showcase games: the scenic landscapes of Grand Teton National Park. Traditionally held in bustling cities, these specialty neutral-site games have become popular events. However, when rumors surfaced about plans to use federal land, Washington quickly stepped in to address the matter.

The White House released an official statement confirming MLB’s approach to former President Donald Trump’s administration. They requested information on hosting a game in a national park, citing inspiration from the celebrated Field of Dreams game in Iowa.

This is not a Presidential directive, nor is it being directed by the White House. It’s also not being driven by the Department of the Interior.

The statement emphasized that organizing this event was neither a priority for the White House nor tied to any direct actions by the administration. No permits have been issued by the National Park Service, and MLB’s plans remain unformed.

If MLB wishes to visit national parks to scout potential locations, they have the freedom to do so, although no commitment from Washington has been made. Concerns may stem from unpredictable wildlife, including bears, near game areas.

MLB’s previous neutral-site games have been well-received, such as the Field of Dreams game in Iowa, the Little League Classic in Williamsport, and the historical matchup at Rickwood Field, Alabama. These events have sparked significant interest and participation from fans.

Recently, Frank Lands, the Deputy Director of the National Park Service, reportedly toured Wyoming to evaluate three potential sites for the game. The White House, however, clarified that this was part of a routine tour and not related to baseball field selection.

Logistically, hosting a baseball game in a national park presents challenges. Temporary facilities like grandstands and lighting would need to be constructed. Traffic and wildlife management add complexity. Such a project requires extensive environmental reviews, public consultations, and administrative processes.

Given MLB’s packed event schedule for 2027, the earliest this grand vision may come to life is 2028. The league must account for the planning and approval processes needed to bring a baseball game to the natural backdrop of the Teton Range.
