Taran Noah Smith, a former actor known for his role in ‘Home Improvement,’ discussed reasons why the popular 1990s sitcom ended. At seven years old, Smith became Mark Taylor, the youngest son of Tim ‘The Tool Man’ Taylor, played by Tim Allen, and Jill Taylor, portrayed by Patricia Richardson.
‘Home Improvement,’ inspired by Allen’s stand-up persona, focused on Tim, a TV host famous for his show ‘Tool Time,’ and his life with Jill and their sons Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan) and Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas). The sitcom aired for eight seasons, producing 204 episodes, and became a top-rated series in the ’90s.
Smith revealed on the ‘Outgrown’ podcast that Richardson’s departure led to the show’s conclusion in 1999, as she declined to return for a ninth season. Richardson joined the cast as Jill shortly before filming the pilot, replacing Frances Fisher due to chemistry concerns.
Smith praised Richardson’s realistic portrayal, noting her efforts to maintain authenticity in the script. He agreed with her approach, despite child actors not directly engaging in script discussions. Creative differences emerged when a new team replaced the original creators, altering the show’s direction.
The original creators’ departure left Richardson to preserve character consistency against jokes that felt out of character. Smith speculated Tim Allen’s hands-off direction was influenced by the fate of ‘Roseanne,’ created by ‘Home Improvement’ co-creator Matt Williams.
Roseanne Barr’s conflicts led to Williams’ exit and Barr’s eventual control of ‘Roseanne,’ influencing Allen’s approach on ‘Home Improvement.’ Richardson ultimately left due to exhaustion from striving for realism, and disputes over pay disparity with Allen. Despite offers for a ninth season, she requested equal pay and producer credit, knowing it would be declined, prompting her departure.
Reflecting on her experiences, Richardson, who earned Emmy nominations, highlighted her contributions to shaping the character and storylines. She emphasized her desire for fair recognition and her decision to prioritize family time after her divorce and the series’ declining viewership.
