Two drones were observed over a German military base earlier this week. This incident followed the discovery of a drone carrying explosives at a cargo airport. The German Armed Forces reported the activity on Saturday.
Security personnel at the Bundeswehr base in Mechernich detected the drones at around 10 p.m. on Thursday, as stated by the German Joint Force Command. The sightings prompted the deployment of military police forces to the location.
The Euskirchen police department is leading the investigation into the matter. For now, neither the police nor the military have shared further details.
A spokeswoman confirmed the sighting of drones over the Bleiberg Barracks in Mechernich. This raises concerns due to the increase in drone reports over civilian and cargo airports.
Last year, mysterious drone flights disrupted the airspace of several European Union countries, resulting in flight cancellations and passenger delays.
The recent discovery of a drone with explosives occurred at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a major international freight hub. U.S. officials believe the drone is of Russian origin. The airport also supports NATO operations daily, delivering equipment to Eastern European NATO battle groups.
Recent incidents have led American intelligence to suggest Russian leadership may escalate provocations onto NATO territories. Since the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, there have been accusations of Russia orchestrating attacks, including drone incursions and cyber operations throughout Europe.
On Friday, the Russian Embassy in Germany dismissed the Leipzig drone incident as “anti-Russian hysteria.”
