Dusty May has taken on the role of head coach for the Dallas Mavericks, marking a surprising move for the NBA offseason. Stepping away from the Michigan Wolverines, May replaces Jason Kidd who was recently dismissed from the position.
This new role allows May to contribute to developing a team centered around Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving. When speaking to Fox News Digital, May expressed his enthusiasm for the position, highlighting the strong alignment with the Mavericks’ front office and ownership group. He also noted the presence of a young star in Cooper Flagg alongside one of the game’s greatest point guards, Kyrie Irving.
“The alignment with the front office and ownership group,” May told Fox News Digital/OutKick. “In addition, a young superstar in Cooper with one of the best point guards in the history of our game!”
May’s decision comes shortly after he led Michigan to the 2026 national championship, solidifying his reputation as a prominent figure in basketball coaching. During his time with the Wolverines, he achieved an impressive 64-13 record.
The narrative of May’s rise in the coaching world stands as one of the sport’s significant success stories. He first gained attention by taking Florida Atlantic to an unexpected Final Four appearance in 2023. Subsequently, May accepted the Michigan coaching role in 2024, transforming the Wolverines into a leading national team once again. His final four seasons with Michigan boasted an outstanding 124-26 record.
The departure of May places Michigan in the position of seeking a new coach during the summer. Despite the change, Michigan retains a strong roster featuring Final Four Most Outstanding Player Elliot Cadeau, rising sophomore Trey McKenney, and several notable transfers. Under NCAA regulations, players will have the option to reconsider their future once a new head coach is appointed.
Dallas concluded the previous season with a 26-56 record. The Mavericks hold the 9th and 30th picks for the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft.
