Dylan Stewart, a standout player for the South Carolina Gamecocks, has found himself in a challenging situation. Widely regarded as a top prospect for the 2027 NFL draft, Stewart’s recent actions have put his future in question.
During South Carolina’s recent game against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Stewart was ejected after an altercation with Alabama’s tight end, Josh Ford. He was seen punching Ford’s helmet and later engaged in a heated exchange with his coaches on the sidelines. Following the incident, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer announced Stewart’s indefinite suspension.
“I’ll make the decision on what his future looks like beyond this week here in the next day or so,” Beamer stated during a press conference. “Still having some meetings and talking with him, but he won’t play this week versus Kentucky. There’s a standard of how we do things in our program and that was not it last night,” he added. “It’s beyond the punch. The punch is unacceptable.”
Beamer emphasized the importance of accountability, noting that while Stewart is not the first player to lose his temper, the expectations within the program are clear.
Stewart has been impressive since his freshman year, recording 6.5 sacks and 23 tackles in 2024. In 2025, he had 4.5 sacks and 33 tackles, earning a second-team All-SEC selection. College football expert Phil Steele also recognized him as an honorable mention All-American.
As the team prepares to face Kentucky, Stewart’s absence poses a challenge for the Gamecocks, who are currently 2-2 following their loss to Alabama. The uncertainty of Stewart’s return to the field adds another layer of complexity to the team’s ongoing season.
The South Carolina Gamecocks will need to regroup and focus as they approach their next matchup, while Stewart and the coaching staff determine the best path forward for his future in college football.
