Early Voting Starts Strong in Lake and Porter Counties

Election season began early in Lake County, sparking optimism for the upcoming November general election. Elections and Registration Director Michelle Fajman noted that early voting helps avoid the long lines closer to the election date, encouraging people to vote early if they can. Michael and Marcia Foreman from Valparaiso were among those voting on October 6, 2026, at the Porter County Administration Building. They shared the sentiment of many, finding early voting more convenient due to shorter lines.

At the Porter County Administration Building, early voters formed a line stretching out of the conference room and down the hallway. Michael Foreman stressed the importance of their voices being heard. Marcia Foreman appreciated the convenience, while fellow voter Rose Ross preferred avoiding the cold November weather.

By 11 a.m. on the first day, 511 mail-in ballots had been returned in Lake County. In 2022, 972 were returned on the first day. By 4:15 p.m., 1,549 people had voted early, excluding figures from Lowell Town Hall. Fajman expressed optimism as the numbers had already surpassed half of those from four years ago.

For the first time, early voting will be available on a Sunday, October 25, accommodating those unable to vote on Election Day. Voting hours and locations were expanded to several sites, ensuring wider access for voters.

In Porter County, early voting runs through November 2. Voting times vary by day, and locations include Chesterton Town Hall, Hebron Community Center, and Valparaiso Training Center, among others.

Voters shared their positive experiences on the first day of early voting. Frank Baccino and Jaranata Sharp, both from Crown Point, highlighted the smooth process with minimal wait times. Sharp emphasized the ease and importance of getting it done early to avoid long lines. Community members stressed the importance of voting to make their voices heard on issues like affordability and immigration policies.

Valparaiso resident Charlotte Sterling underscored personal motivations behind her early voting decision. She had been impacted by an elected official’s handling of a family tragedy, highlighting the influence local elections have on personal lives. JoEllen Raby expressed surprise at the busy turnout but was encouraged by the engagement.

Raymond Riddell faced a minor issue with his ballot but was assisted by diligent poll workers, ensuring the matter was quickly resolved. Information on early voting locations and times can be found on the respective Lake and Porter County websites.
