Erin Brockovich Launches Website to Address AI Data Center Concerns

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich is reaching out to the public for help by introducing a website to gather concerns about data centers. These facilities, crucial for AI growth, are spreading rapidly across the U.S., often meeting local resistance.

Rising Numbers of Data Centers

The U.S. is now home to over 4,200 data centers, as reported by Data Center Map. These centers are essential for AI operations, including training and deployment. Brockovich’s website, brockovichdatacenter.com, outlines several issues associated with these centers.

Key Concerns Highlighted

  • High energy consumption leading to environmental and cost concerns
  • Substantial water use for cooling, straining local resources
  • Increased e-waste from frequent hardware upgrades
  • Exposure to risks from natural disasters or geopolitical instability
  • Growth pressures that might outpace local infrastructure
  • Disruptive noise from cooling systems and generators

The website emphasizes the importance of sustainable, secure, and efficient practices for AI data centers, advocating for self-reporting to bring issues to public attention.

Community Concerns

As of Monday, more than 2,716 reports were submitted on the website. Texas, hosting over 460 data centers, accounted for the most submissions with 612 reports. Water use emerged as the top concern, followed by electricity, health, and wildlife.

“The race to build AI infrastructures is unfolding town by town across America. In some places, data centers are welcomed. In others, they are delayed, contested or abandoned altogether. This map captures the real-world footprint of that race—revealing patterns of growth, conflict and uncertainty,”

Brockovich commented.

About Erin Brockovich

Erin Brockovich is a renowned environmental activist and consumer advocate. She gained national recognition by building a case against Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) regarding groundwater contamination in California. Her efforts were dramatized in the 2000 film Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Roberts. The movie highlights her journey as a legal clerk uncovering illnesses linked to contamination in Hinkley, California, during the early 1990s.

Eventually, Brockovich helped secure a $333 million settlement from PG&E in 1996 for the affected community. This was the largest direct-action lawsuit settlement in U.S. history at that time.
