The House of Representatives’ internal watchdog is currently reviewing allegations against Texas House Republican, Rep. Lance Gooden. He described these accusations as “baseless” in a statement on Monday. The investigation, led by the House Committee on Ethics, has been officially announced.
While the specific reason behind the probe remains unclear, Gooden attributed the investigation to finance-related issues in his response to Fox News Digital. He insisted that the allegations are false and stated, “These are bogus spending allegations perpetrated by dishonest unelected OCC bureaucrats. As the fifth Texas GOP ally of the president to face such attacks, I am confident the House Ethics Committee will confirm their baseless nature.”
The committee is extending its review of a “matter” reported to the Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC) on June 10, 2026. This step precedes the decision on whether to initiate a full investigation. A statement from the committee mentioned, “The Committee will announce its course of action in this matter on or before November 9.”
The OCC operates as an independent, nonpartisan entity focused on scrutinizing allegations against House lawmakers, staff, and officers. According to its website, the OCC investigates a range of issues including earmarks, travel, financial disclosures, and legal expense funds. Members assess these allegations and determine if they should be referred to the House Ethics Committee.
The announcement signaled a preliminary review by the Ethics panel. Lawmakers must now decide whether to advance to a formal investigation that includes an investigatory subcommittee.
