President Donald Trump took the stage at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, delivering a blend of jokes and jabs. His commentary spared few, with figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., late-night hosts, and Rep. Adam Schiff in the crosshairs.
Fox News’ Christina Coleman reported on the night’s highlights, focusing on Trump’s humorous yet critical statements. During the event, Trump’s remarks compared a transgender influencer, Dylan Mulvaney, to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, sparking online reactions.
“Maybe being publicly mocked and criticized by this administration is actually like the greatest compliment of all,” Mulvaney remarked in response, taking to TikTok to share thoughts on the matter. Mulvaney, previously a well-known social media influencer, had faced controversy over an advertising partnership with Bud Light.
The Bud Light campaign had resulted in stock losses of over $27 billion for Anheuser-Busch. Trump’s joke referenced this scenario, stating, “I thought Kaitlan Collins had really made it big with a major new sponsorship, but then I informed her that it wasn’t her on the Bud Light can, it was Dylan Mulvaney.” Mulvaney responded by quoting artist Shea Diamond, asserting a sense of empowerment.
Trump’s remarks didn’t stop with Mulvaney, as he continued to criticize Collins. He sarcastically congratulated her on receiving the WHCA Award for Excellence in Presidential News Coverage, questioning its authenticity but keeping the mood light.
“She never smiles. I said, ‘Kaitlan, do you ever smile? Smile. You have a nice position. You’re at CNN — fake news. You should be a happy person. So smile, Kaitlan. Just smile,'” Trump encouraged during his speech.
In response to these comments, Collins shared an Eleanor Roosevelt quote on social media: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Additionally, CNN publicly defended Collins and their newsroom’s integrity, with Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson affirming their right to report news without government interference.
Trump’s commentary at the WHCA Dinner was met with varying reactions, highlighting tensions between the media and political figures.
