Expanding the Abraham Accords: Trump’s Diplomatic Ambitions

The Abraham Accords marked a significant shift in diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Amid efforts to extend these accords, former President Trump has expressed a desire for more Middle Eastern countries to join, with Iran suggested as a potential participant.

During a call on social media, Trump emphasized that such cooperation would further enhance and solidify relationships across the Middle East. He specifically named Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Pakistan as nations that should be prepared to sign the agreement.

Since his re-election in 2024, Trump’s attempts to expand the accords have seen mixed results. Kazakhstan joined in November, although it already maintained full diplomatic ties with Israel.

If additional countries embrace these accords, it could address criticisms from Iran hawks who oppose Trump’s peace initiatives. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, has voiced concerns about negotiating with Iran but acknowledged the potential impact of Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries normalizing ties. He remarked, ‘It will be historic and one of the most consequential agreements in history.’ The ultimate goal, according to Graham, has always been to isolate Iran.

Nonetheless, analysts believe that significant changes are unlikely to occur in the near future. Resolving ongoing conflicts, such as those involving the United States and Israel with Iran, may not be sufficient to persuade Saudi Arabia and others to join the accords.

A deeper understanding of the Abraham Accords can reveal the complexities and potential implications of expanding these diplomatic efforts in the region.
