Stepping outside, Lucerne appeared as picturesque as Switzerland often does, with the impressive Alps in view, their white peaks mirrored in the turquoise waters of Lake Lucerne. However, the atmosphere was not typical of the cool mountain air usually expected here. Instead, the air was heavy with heat and humidity, making movement feel like traversing through dense, hot cotton.
Lucerne’s charm was undeniable, but the air felt more like a tropical location. Along the waterfront, soccer fans in red and white gathered to watch the FIFA World Cup. They focused on screens broadcasting the match—from the U.S. between Switzerland and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The crowd erupted with cheers every time the Swiss team scored, contrasting the tropical-like ambiance around them.
The scene drew parallels to a previous reporting visit to Switzerland. On that occasion, I journeyed to Rhône Glacier with a Swiss glaciologist. He highlighted Switzerland’s vulnerability to climate change, where extreme temperatures are more common, and glaciers are rapidly retreating.
As the night concluded, Switzerland triumphed in the World Cup matchup. Yet, the country continues to struggle against the challenges posed by a warming climate.
