Feeling trapped or bored with daily life? Consider starting a side quest. In video games, side quests are missions outside the main story that enrich the experience. In life, a side quest is an activity done for enjoyment, bringing play and exploration into your routine.
When was the last time you engaged in something purely for fun? Perhaps roller-skating or learning a language without fluency pressures? Side quests, like in gaming, offer depth and add new perspectives. Ethnomusicologist Kyra Gaunt says, “it brings out facets of yourself that you thought you couldn’t be.” Play can improve adaptation, problem-solving, collaboration, and open your mind’s neural networks, creating a sense of wonder.
Finding Your Side Quest
Start by recalling childhood play. Jeff Harry, a public speaker on play, suggests this as a good starting point. Did you enjoy LEGO, painting, or catching fireflies? Try to integrate similar activities now, such as acting or hiking if you loved physical challenges.
Discovering Your Play Personality
If you struggle to find an activity, consider a quiz assessing your play style, as described by play researcher Stuart Brown. Discover if you are a “dreamer” or an “organizer,” which might inspire a new side quest.
Trying Something New
Gaunt encourages trying unfamiliar activities. She found unexpected growth by taking a drawing class, enhancing her writing skills.
Follow Your Impulses
If indecisive, listen to your instincts. Sahara Moné, a play community curator, advises to start with small urges, like a long-desired acting class, signaling a good beginning.
Using ARTSN to Start Your Quest
Apply the ARTSN method suggested by Gaunt:
- A: Achievable activities are small enough to begin.
- R: Revelatory experiences teach new self-understanding.
- T: Time-bound activities have a clear timeline.
- S: Specific goals define the activity.
- N: Notice your feelings and surprises post-activity.
Adults often seek control over outcomes. Side quests relieve this pressure, leading to freedom and enjoyment. Have you embarked on a life-altering side quest? Share your experience with Life Kit at [email protected] for potential inclusion on NPR.org.
