The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is examining recent safety concerns involving drones and fireworks at U.S. airports.
Drone Strike Near JFK Airport
Cheryl Casone of Fox Business addressed the heightened danger posed by drones near airports. A JetBlue flight recently encountered a drone near JFK Airport. Additionally, a helicopter experienced a close call with a large toy airplane.
Drones present tracking challenges due to the absence of transponders. The FAA has introduced a public safety campaign to mitigate risks. Approximately 100 complaints are submitted monthly. Interference with aircraft can lead to fines up to $100,000.
Fireworks Incident at Chicago Midway Airport
On the Fourth of July, a Delta Air Lines flight faced a different type of hazard. The FAA reported that Delta Flight 1076 was hit by a fireworks mortar while descending into Chicago Midway International Airport. Despite the incident, the flight arrived safely at Midway around 8:30 p.m. local time.
The aircraft departed from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 7:51 p.m. ET and landed without incident. A spokesperson confirmed that the airplane, an Airbus A319, was carrying 52 passengers and six crew members.
There were no injuries, and the aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate without an emergency declaration. Post-flight inspections by Delta mechanics revealed no damage. However, Chicago police noted minor paint damage was present, prompting additional inspections to check for further issues.
The FAA intends to investigate this fireworks event, seeking to determine the launch location and identify those responsible. Delta pledged to cooperate with the FAA and relevant authorities during the investigation.
